Comparative Law and Society (Paperback): David S. Clark Comparative Law and Society (Paperback)
David S. Clark
R1,593 Discovery Miles 15 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Comparative Law and Society, part of the Research Handbooks in Comparative Law series, is a pioneering volume that comprises 19 original essays written by expert authors from across the world. This innovative handbook offers both a history of the field of comparative law and society and a thorough exploration of its methods, disciplines, and major issues, presenting the most comprehensive look into this contemporary field to date. In Part I, Methods and Disciplines, contributors approach critical issues in comparative law and society from a variety of academic fields, including sociology, criminology, anthropology, economics, political science, and psychology. This multidisciplinary approach highlights the importance of addressing the variance of perspectives inherent to the field. In Part II, Core Issues, chapters offer an exploration of major legal institutions, processes, professionals, and cultures associated with particular legal subjects. Since authors utilize the perspective of at least two different legal systems, this book offers a truly thorough and wide-ranging focus. The general reader, as well as students and scholars, will find this handbook useful in their continuing explorations into the interaction between law and society. Practitioners such as lawyers and judges with an interest in global perspectives of law will also find much to admire in this innovative volume. Contributors: M. Adler, N. Brewer, D.S. Clark, R. R1,173 Discovery Miles 11 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1987, this book is an attempt to re-establish semiotic on the basis of principles consistent with its past history, rather than the 'cultural semiotics' of the European tradition, and especially with the guiding ideas of Peirce and Morris. The book is divided into two parts, with the first two chapters providing the background for the more systematic discussions of signs at different levels taken up in the last three. In the final chapter issues that have become the focus of recent philosophy of language regarding the reference, meaning, and truth of sentences are discussed in light of the analogies to more primitive signs developed in the preceding two chapters.

Fairbairn and the Object Relations Tradition (Hardcover): Graham S Clarke Fairbairn and the Object Relations Tradition (Hardcover)
Graham S Clarke
R3,893 Discovery Miles 38 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ronald Fairbairn developed a thoroughgoing object relations theory that became a foundation for modern clinical thought. This volume is homage to the enduring power of his thinking, and of his importance now and for the future of relational thinking within the social and human sciences. The book gathers an international group of therapists, analysts, psychiatrists, social commentators, and historians, who contend that Fairbairn's work extends powerfully beyond the therapeutic. They suggest that social, cultural, and historical dimensions can all be illuminated by his work.Object relations as a strand within psychoanalysis began with Freud and passed through Ferenczi and Rank, Balint, Suttie, and Klein, to come of age in Fairbairn's papers of the early 1940s. That there is still life in this line of thinking is illustrated by the essays in this collection and by the modern relational turn in psychoanalytic theory, the development of attachment theory, and the increasing recognition that there is 'no such thing as an ego' without context, without relationships, without a social milieu.

Personal Relations Theory - Fairbairn, Macmurray and Suttie (Paperback, New): Graham S Clarke Personal Relations Theory - Fairbairn, Macmurray and Suttie (Paperback, New)
Graham S Clarke
R1,289 Discovery Miles 12 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Personal relationships concern us all, they are essential to our becoming who we are and constitute our most vital experience of what it is like to be alive and human. This book proposes a new approach to understanding who we are based on the work of Ronald Fairbairn, John Macmurray and Ian Suttie, whose ideas provide a positive perspective on our future collective possibilities.
"Personal Relations Theory" presents a new and comprehensive account of Fairbairn's mature theory. Part One provides a thorough overview of Fairbairn's work and its ramifications for our understanding of creativity and the nature of inner reality. Part Two covers Fairbairn's relationship to Macmurray and Suttie, and their relevance to realist philosophy, the scientific status of psychoanalysis, attachment theory and the politics of the personal relations view point. Subjects discussed in depth include:
- Internal objects and inner reality: Fairbairn and Klein
- Fairbairn's theory of art in the light of his mature model of mind
- The preconscious and psychic change in Fairbairn's model of mind
- The politics of attachment theory and personal relations theory: Fairbairn, Suttie and Bowlby
The combination of Fairbairn, Macmurray and Suttie presented here forms an original strand of object relations theory, which has implications and consequences for a wide spectrum of concerns. This book will be of value to anyone interested in psychoanalysis, especially in relation to politics, society and the arts

Learning From Somalia - The Lessons Of Armed Humanitarian Intervention (Paperback): Walter S. Clarke Learning From Somalia - The Lessons Of Armed Humanitarian Intervention (Paperback)
Walter S. Clarke
R1,591 Discovery Miles 15 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The U.S.-led intervention in Somalia that began in December 1992 is the most significant instance to date of "peacemaking" by the international community. The heady promise of Operation Restore Hope and the subsequent disappointments have had a resounding impact on the policies of Western governments and the UN as they have tried to cope with humanitarian emergencies in Rwanda, Bosnia, and elsewhere. However, it is questionable how correct the lessons so quickly derived from the Somalia experience actually were. At the same time, many important organizational and operational innovations during the Somalia exercise have not received sufficient attention. Learning from Somalia is therefore critical if the international community is to respond better to tragedies that threaten millions of human lives.Contributors to this book, many of whom are policymakers who were either in Mogadishu or Washington during the relief missions, examine the intervention in Somalia and draw lessons for future peacekeeping operations. They analyze many aspects of peacemaking that are not well understood, including efforts to rebuild the police force, the dynamics of the economy, the relationship between the military and nongovernmental organizations, and the performance of European armies. The book also discusses international politics surrounding the crisis, especially the relationship between the United States and the UN and the legal justifications for intervention. The concluding chapters discuss the prospects for intervention efforts in light of the Somalia experience.

The Limits of Judicial Independence (Hardcover, New): Tom S. Clark The Limits of Judicial Independence (Hardcover, New)
Tom S. Clark
R1,600 Discovery Miles 16 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates the causes and consequences of congressional attacks on the US Supreme Court, arguing that the extent of public support for judicial independence constitutes the practical limit of judicial independence. First, the book presents a historical overview of Court-curbing proposals in Congress. Then, building on interviews with Supreme Court justices, members of Congress, and judicial and legislative staffers, the book theorizes that congressional attacks are driven by public discontent with the Court. From this theoretical model, predictions are derived about the decision to engage in Court-curbing and judicial responsiveness to Court-curbing activity in Congress. The Limits of Judicial Independence draws on illustrative archival evidence, systematic analysis of an original dataset of Court-curbing proposals introduced in Congress from 1877 onward and judicial decisions.

Thinking Through Fairbairn - Exploring the Object Relations Model of Mind (Paperback): Graham S Clarke Thinking Through Fairbairn - Exploring the Object Relations Model of Mind (Paperback)
Graham S Clarke
R1,146 Discovery Miles 11 460 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Thinking through Fairbairn offers parallel perspectives on Fairbairn's work. It explores an extended interpretation of his 'psychology of dynamic structure' and applies that model to a number of different areas. Fairbairn's Scottish origins are explored through his relationship with the work of Ian Suttie and Edward Glover. A new extended object relations model of phantasy and inner reality that reflects Fairbairn's approach as represented by his contribution to the Controversial Discussions is also developed. In cooperation with Paul Finnegan, this version of Fairbairn's model is applied to an understanding of multiple personality disorder or dissociative identity disorder. This model is combined with Fairbairn's theory of art to provide an understanding of some 'puzzle' films based in trauma and dissociation. Fairbairn's theory is presented here as a synthesis of classical and relational approaches, and his appropriation by relational theorists as a precursor to exclusively relational approaches challenged.

Predictive Statistics - Analysis and Inference beyond Models (Hardcover): Bertrand S. Clarke, Jennifer L. Clarke Predictive Statistics - Analysis and Inference beyond Models (Hardcover)
Bertrand S. Clarke, Jennifer L. Clarke
R2,341 Discovery Miles 23 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

All scientific disciplines prize predictive success. Conventional statistical analyses, however, treat prediction as secondary, instead focusing on modeling and hence estimation, testing, and detailed physical interpretation, tackling these tasks before the predictive adequacy of a model is established. This book outlines a fully predictive approach to statistical problems based on studying predictors; the approach does not require predictors correspond to a model although this important special case is included in the general approach. Throughout, the point is to examine predictive performance before considering conventional inference. These ideas are traced through five traditional subfields of statistics, helping readers to refocus and adopt a directly predictive outlook. The book also considers prediction via contemporary 'black box' techniques and emerging data types and methodologies where conventional modeling is so difficult that good prediction is the main criterion available for evaluating the performance of a statistical method. Well-documented open-source R code in a Github repository allows readers to replicate examples and apply techniques to other investigations.

Fairbairn and the Object Relations Tradition (Paperback): Graham S Clarke, David E. Scharff Fairbairn and the Object Relations Tradition (Paperback)
Graham S Clarke, David E. Scharff
R1,906 Discovery Miles 19 060 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Substantial contributions from an internationally varied host of authors use newly available material to develop novel aspects of Fairbairn s life and theory, reviewing the basic ideas of his theory, clinical application, and new developments built on his object relations vision of psychoanalysis. Comprising thirty-nine papers, thirty-six of which are original to this volume, the book is divided into four main sections historical, clinical, theoretical and applied. Fairbairn s contribution to object-relations theory is rehearsed and the future development of Fairbairn s work is considered. Fairbairn s relationship with Guntrip and Winnicott is explored, his influence on a philosophical and a clinical understanding of multiplicity is assessed, his social and historical papers are mined for his views on prejudice and the social order, and new models of clinical configurations suggested. Fairbairn s relationship with and influence on Mitchell is investigated from different perspectives and his position within Scottish and psychoanalytic history also developed. Fairbairn s contribution to couple therapy, to an understanding of the Oedipus situation, to the acceptance and understanding of literary works and to child welfare are all broached. The influence of religion and Fairbairn s own understanding of his gender identity are explored based on newly available documents including some self-analytic notes. Fairbairn s influence in South America and in particular Argentina is manifest in a variety of contributions, and his significant but generally forgotten or ignored contribution to psychoanalytic aesthetics is assessed."

Places Lost and Found - Travel Essays from the Hudson Review (Paperback): Ronald Koury Places Lost and Found - Travel Essays from the Hudson Review (Paperback)
Ronald Koury; Contributions by Dick Davis, Joseph Bennett, Guy Davenport, Alice Bloom, …
R1,013 R809 Discovery Miles 8 090 Save R204 (20%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Hudson Review has always had an international focus. Travel and reports from abroad have figured prominently in the journal, including essays on exotic and picturesque locales, as well as accounts from war-torn areas and the experiences of exiles. Many of these are pilgrimages; others are harrowing memoirs. What unites even the most devastating of these accounts are intellectual curiosity and a spirit of adventure. Places Lost and Found is a treasury of distinctive and compelling essays selected from six decades of the Hudson Review. From a description of the gardens of Kyoto and a portrait of Syria just before its civil war to reflections on Veblen and the Mall of America, these essays explore an array of places that are deeply layered with history and meaning. The stunning cover photo of the Semper Opera House in Dresden encapsulates many of the themes of the book: war and its aftermath, the importance of the built environment in any discussion of "place," the endurance of civilization and resilience, and of course the romance of travel.
